The quick version is nutrient deficiency. We already know that Magnesium is a central part in chlorophyll, but there are other essential elements like Iron, Manganese, and Molybdenum that are necessary in many enzyme activities, and a deficiency in one of these nutrients can lead to interveinal chlorosis. Symptoms of Interveinal Chlorosis When a leaf displays interveinal chlorosis, the veins in that leaf will look a normal shade of green while the leaf tissue in between the veins (called mesophyll) is a pale green, or even yellow when the chlorosis is more severe. It is a loss of chlorophyll in the leaf, causing a yellow appearance throughout the entire leaf. Interveinal chlorosis is a yellowing of the leaf, but with a distinct difference from simple chlorosis; the veins of the leaf remain green. If left untreated, interveinal chlorosis can be detrimental to the plant. As the disease progresses, the spots on upper leaves coalesce to form brown streaks or blotches between the veins as the tissue dies (interveinal necrosis) (Figure 1).
