It is the relation between the imaginary and symbolic in conscious and unconscious thought which is the core of Lacanian psychoanalysis. The symbolic (symbolique) refers to the signifying order, signifiers, in language, which determine the subject; it refers to the unconscious, and the intellectual, the logos endiathetos and the Lacan conceived of the symbolic order as a totalizing concept in the sense that it marks the limit of the human universe. We are born into language - the language through which the desires of others are articulated and through which we are forced to articulate our own desire. We are locked within what Lacan calls a circuit of discourse: The child's entry into that order is described as inherently linked to sexuality, desire and the unconscious and as accompanied by feelings of alienation and separation.

Simply what Jacques Lacan called "big Other," the virtual symbolic order, the network that structures reality for us. In a properly paranoiac way, the film externalizes this virtual symbolic order in the really-existing Mega-Computer. According to Lacan, there are three stages of the first four years of one’s life. These stages: The Real, The Imaginary, and The Symbolic , are each important in the studies of psychoanalysis, but for our purposes we will be focusing on The Imaginary or, as it is more well known, The Mirror Stage. However, if we’re talking about media, perception, and representation, we begin with the symbolic-real-imaginary triad of Jacques Lacan’s three psychoanalytic orders, developed during a series of lectures in the 1950’s. Symbolic identification, or the symbolic order, is, specifically, the idea of an equal correspondence between each signifier and signified in a whole system of relations, especially in language. In the analogy of kinship, Lacan notes that the notion of belonging to one’s father’s name allows other rules to appear, such as the idea of breeding strictly within one’s own generation and the
Jacques Lacan's ideas appear of particular relevance to those interested in mental health. In particular, a symptom for Lacan is the way one may have to cope with one's particular way of being. It is only when a symptom becomes a problem that we seek help.

The acceptance of language's rules is aligned with the Oedipus complex, according to Lacan. The symbolic is made possible because of your acceptance of the Name-of-the-Father, those laws and restrictions that control both your desire and the rules of communication: "It is in the name of the father that we must recognize the support of the symbolic function which, from the dawn of history, has … However, if we’re talking about media, perception, and representation, we begin with the symbolic-real-imaginary triad of Jacques Lacan’s three psychoanalytic orders, developed during a … Symbolic order was the second idea in the theory.
To clarify Lacan’s theory I interpret his insights, as found primarily in the 1964 seminar published as Lacan (1978), “The Four Fundamental Concepts of Psychoanalysis
The child's entry into that order is described as inherently linked to sexuality, desire and the unconscious and as accompanied by feelings of alienation and separation. Insofar as the desire of the unconscious is toward the “Other” Lacan seems to support my claim of an endogenous origin of the societal order. The last stage of the process involves the discovery of symbolic order, in which one learns the norms of his society.

It was prompted by confusions between us about the use of "symbolic", where I was using it in Lacan's sense of the term, and he in the more vernacular way where we might say that "X is symbolic of Y". Situating the mirror stage in theory requires some theoretical exposition of what situates it. To be extremely brief, since as noted earlier, exploration of the symbolic order is the theme of nearly all Lacan's work, I will simply note four features of the symbolic order: its composition, complexity, comprehensiveness, and contingency. the symbolic order in Lacan's subject theory is also referred to by him as the Big other or simply the Other with a capital O (to distinguish from the other of the imaginary order). Lacan's ideas regarding the symbolic order or the big other are based on the works of de-Saussure, Jakobson, Hegel, Heidegger and Claude Levi-Strauss.

...or Worse: The Seminar of Jacques Lacan: Lacan, Jacques, Miller
Although Lacan uses the terms " real," " symbolic " and " imaginary " from early on in his work, it is not until 1953 that he speaks of these as three " orders " or three " registers.") From that moment on they come to be the fundamental classification system around which all his theorizing turns. Lacan's Three Orders, Symbolic, Imaginary, Real (with a bit about "reality") [this is a chunk taken from a letter I wrote to an artist friend. It was prompted by confusions between us about the use of "symbolic", where I was using it in Lacan's sense of the term, and he in the more vernacular way where we might say that "X is symbolic of Y". Lacan maintains that in order to achieve social personhood (persona), the child must submit to or accept the inevitability of the Symbolic. If language is split from reality, then when the subject acquires symbolic language, s/he becomes symbolized: the language speaks the subject. Lacan and psychoanalysis.
